Thoughts on Hacking

I think as library and information professionals, we need to help the public with the overwhelming amount of cyber crime of which they are probably unaware. If they are aware of the dangers to their personal computers, smart phones, or personal wireless networks, they probably do not know how to guard against it. I have mentioned this in a previous post, but I think it would be a worthy topic to set up a few classes at the local library on how to protect their personal information and make themselves less of a target. The classes could vary from the basics of buying/storing information online to setting up VPNs, etc. Since it seems everyone has the most basic of smart phones these days, it wouldn’t hurt to help the patrons know more about the machines they use.

The rate at which even low-level hacks occur will only increase since everyone is so familiar with the technology that we use.
